Customize Campus District:
An Augmented Reality Installation
Program Details
Program Description: Customize Campus District is an augmented reality (AR) installation in the neighborhood. It is a collection of five locations throughout the Campus District that will be altered using AR. Three sites include original artwork from local artists and the remaining two sites host effects created by CleAR Experiences. Users can tour these sites using the Campus District Inc. website, and applications like Facebook and Instagram. The intention of the installation is to expose users to ways our public landscape can be improved to better serve the people who spend time there. AR graphics allow users to engage directly with the sites in person or in the comfort of their own homes. Additionally, Campus District Inc. staff are leading in-person walking tours of the sites that guide participants through the AR experience.
Neighborhood Context: Campus District is Cleveland’s community of purpose—a place where you can learn, heal, grow, and create. It is located on the eastern edge of Cleveland’s Downtown, spanning from East 18th Street to East 30th Street, north to Lake Erie and south to Orange Avenue. The neighborhood is home to anchor institutions--Cleveland State University, Tri-C’s Metro Campus, and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center; as well as the Superior Arts District, crucial homeless service agencies, residents, light industry, and business. The locations selected for AR effects are sites in the neighborhood we believe can be enhanced to better serve the community.
Locations:
All AR effect locations are situated along East 22nd Street. East 22nd Street serves as a crucial north-south spine of the Campus District, taking users from Tri-C’s campus all the way to the Superior Arts District. Currently, the corridor feels wide, loud, and harsh—more suited for vehicle use than people use. We believe your creative artistry can inspire people to rethink these three locations along the street.
Midway Bike Boulevard
The Midway is a landscape-buffered, two-directional center lane for bike use only. NOACA has allocated $8.3 million for construction for the first leg of the project and will run from Public Square to E. 55th Street, along Superior Avenue and through the Superior Arts District. The Midway offers continuous physical protection between cyclists and passing motor vehicles. Our effect will help you envision this new community asset!
East 22nd Street and Euclid Avenue
East 22nd Street goes underneath the CSU parking garage between Euclid Avenue and Chester Avenue. For those on scooter, bike, or foot this section is dreary and dark. Explore it’s new artwork on our tour.
East 22nd Street Bridge Over I-90
East 22nd Street crosses over I-90 between Central Avenue and Cedar Avenue. Not only is there a lot of freeway noise and car traffic, but I-90 is also one of Cleveland’s examples of infrastructural racism. Built in the 1950s, this freeway purposefully separates the historically black neighborhood of Central from the historically white central business district. We believe that artwork and design can help repair this division. Additionally, the Ohio Department of Transportation will be reconstructing the bridge as part of their innerbelt redesign, so our new, creative ideas can become a reality!
Former Juvenile Court Building
This historic building has been vacant for 10 years. It sits at a highly trafficked corner at East 22nd Street and Central Ave. Help us reimagine the site as one that enhances the neighborhood!
Sankofa Village Phase 3
Sankofa Village Phase 3 is the final phase of the new apartment community in the heart of the Campus District. Located across the street from Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus, the building will feature 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom floor plans. It is under construction now. Check out funky AR version of the building through Customize the Campus District!
