People’s Streets
People’s Streets is a grassroots initiative run by volunteers from varying backgrounds who came together to create streets that better serve people. We envision creating connections between diverse neighborhoods, safer streets for all ages and modes of travel, and welcoming places where people embrace their full humanities. Starting with Payne Avenue corridor, we will reimagine a more vibrant streetscape.
Project Description
The People’s Streets project will paint the crosswalks and curb extensions along Payne Avenue at East 22nd Street, East 23rd Street, East 30th Street, East 32nd Street, East 37th Street, and East 39th Street and the temporary restriping of the Payne Avenue bridge over I-90. The project will also include temporary restriping of the lanes along the Payne Avenue Bridge over I-90 with decorative elements like planter boxes.
After receiving approval from the Cleveland Planning Commission on September 17th, 2021, People's Streets together with volunteers, will help paint and install decorative crosswalks, temporary ADA ramps, and curb extensions along Payne Avenue in the Campus District and AsiaTown neighborhoods. The purpose of this project is to better protect pedestrians and cyclists by calming traffic, and elevating their visibility. With an incredible amount of support from the city's Planning Department, volunteers and artists will complete this project in Spring of 2022.
Additionally, the design adds vibrancy and a sense of cultural placemaking to the street, reflecting on existing patterns throughout AsiaTown.
The People's Streets Project will remain up until the proposed resurfacing of Payne Avenue in 2023-2024. This project is made possible with generous support from SPIN Streets, NOACA Street Supplies, and Bike Cleveland.
